SPRING TERM
To celebrate our focus book for this half term’s writing work, Where the Wild Things Are, we had a ‘wild things’ day in class.
We created wild thing masks, built boats like Max’s and tested them to see whether they would float and whether the materials we had chosen were waterproof. We created some wild art using clay to mould our own monsters and even had a competition to see who had the loudest roar!
AUTUMN TERM
A big thank you to our reading volunteer, Mrs Worrall, who helps us learn to read every week!
This week we had a real treat as Mrs Worrall came in to read us all her favourite Christmas tales. We wish her a very happy Christmas and look forward to seeing her again in the new year.
In History, we are learning about childhoods from the past. We were very lucky to have 5 of our grandparents visit us in class to tell us all about what life was like when they were little. We are so grateful to them for giving up their time to come in and chat!
In our computing work, we are learning to log onto the school computers independently and manipulate the mouse when using a programme. Today, we tried to use the Paint programme to draw simple pictures, controlling the mouse and selecting icons.
This half term, we will be learning about how we make history. To start our work, we talked about how we can order events from our past on a timeline, from the earliest event to the present day. Some children were able to use pictures from special events and put these into order by comparing the images to see where they looked younger or older.
To help us explore the sacrament of Baptism, we have created a role play area in our continuous provision space.
We have named our baby Betsy and know that we pour water three times over her head and mark her forehead with a cross using the holy oil.
We lit a candle from the Paschal candle that will stay with Betsy as she grows up, like some of the children have their special candles at home.
Archie even drew a picture of Betsy with the ‘big candle’!
In Maths, we are learning about ‘part-whole’ models, and different ways we can break a whole into two different parts.
Today we had an exciting visit from M6 Theatre Company, who performed ‘A Tiger’s Tale’. We were very excited to learn more about the true story of Fenella the tiger, who lived with a family of circus performers in nearby Holmfirth.
In Science today, we talked about how people have different sizes for some parts of their bodies, such as hands and feet. We talked about why this happens and then compared our foot sizes to create graphs.
Have a look at our lovely Religion display. The children created family trees and we talked about how all families are unique and special.
In today’s Maths lesson we practised counting on from different numbers in different ways.
Today in Maths we have been learning how we can represent values in different ways.
The children are settling well into Year One. Have a look at some of the things we’ve been getting up to over our first few days.
