Smoothie making

To end our topic on Heroes and Villains, today we made smoothies as part of our Science learning about how we can treat our bodies well to keep healthy (hero).

The children really enjoyed planning and making their smoothies. They then evaluated their smoothies and discussed what they liked and would change if they had the chance to make them again.

Below are some pictures of the children enjoying preparing their fruits and then tasting their smoothie.

Year 6 class email:

year6@stpetersrc.rochdale.sch.uk

Dear Year 6 children and parents,

It is with a sad heart that we have to continue our learning remotely since the Prime Minister announced a lockdown again. We are really going to miss seeing you all each day and hearing all about your Christmas gifts and adventures. We hope you had a wonderful time and we hope that we will all be back together soon.

For now we have to continue to learn through our online platforms and ensure we all do the very best we can. I will upload each day's tasks on here (our class page) and you will be guided to other sites and tasks accordingly.  It is expected that you do your best to learn well and access these tasks; as they are what we would have been completing in school if we were able to be here. However, if you do face any difficulties, please get in touch using our class email and I will do my best to offer support or additional guidance.

We hope we can be back to school soon, take care and keep safe,

Mrs Moreton and Mrs Read

SCHOOL CLOSURE

Due to the latest Government announcement, we will be delivering remote learning to ensure you children continue to be educated.

Each day work will be set on your child's class webpage  with clear guidance on how to complete each task.  Each task will be listed and is expected to be complete daily. Some tasks will be completed online through our learning platforms; whereas others may be paper based - in these cases you can send a photograph of work to your teachers class email who will then respond with feedback.

Each new day's tasks will be dated and listed at the top of the web page in red.

Thank you for your patience during these challenging times.

Welcome to Year 6!

My name is Mrs Moreton and I am the Year 6 class teacher.

We are also very lucky to have Mrs Read as our teaching assistant.

We are both very excited to see all the children's wonderful smiles back in school. We fully understand that the children have been away from school for quite some time now but please do not worry. We may have to adapt to perhaps a new school routine but we are a family here at St Peter's and we will do this together!

This page will be regularly updated with key information and will also give you an insight into what the children have been learning in class. We have lots of great topics ahead so please keep on looking to celebrate the children's work and successes over the year,

If anyone needs to get in contact with myself at any time you can send in a note, email year6@stpetersrc.rochdale.sch.uk or ring the school office and I will get back to you as quickly as possible.

Class Information

Times of Day

Children should arrive between 8.50am and 9.00am using the main entrance.   Children will leave school at 3.20pm, via the front playground.

Reading Books

These will be handed out each Monday, with a record kept in school of the books which children have read.

We ask that books are returned on a Friday so they can be quarantined over the weekend.

We strongly recommend that children read for at least ten minutes each day.  If your child will require more than one reading book for the week, they just need to let me know each Monday.

We strongly recommend additional online reading books, you can do               so on the Oxford Owl website, using the following details:                         https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/?selLanguage=en&mode=hub

  • One Mental Maths Test per week;
  • One section of spelling per week (in order of the booklets)
  • Access their online learning apps - Times Tables Rockstars, Numbots and Spelling Shed
  • They can also still choose any aspect of learning on Purple Mash and in future, additional tasks may be set on here as 2do's but the children will know when this has been set.

Spellings

Spelling rules will be practised throughout the week, with a test taking place each Friday.

The following site will also be used to support spelling. Children can access this at home. https://www.spellingshed.com/en-gb

AUTUMN 2

Christmas Party Day

Today we celebrated Christmas in true St. Peter’s style! We had lots of games and quizzes and even a dance!
Kindness was shared through Secret Santa which everyone thoroughly enjoyed - thank you to everyone for sharing this moment with each other and for being so kind and generous.

Merry Christmas everyone!
May hope, love, joy and peace be with you all.

CAFOD GIFTS

Well done Year 6, you have raised such a great amount of money for CAFOD this Christmas through our weekly game of bingo and sacrificed a Christmas present for yourselves to help those in need.
Today the children chose which gifts they wanted to purchase and as a class agreed on the following items.
We are so proud of your selflessness, your actions will truly make a difference to other people’s’ lives.
Well done!

Science Investigation

Over the past two weeks in science we have been studying different types of birds and their beaks. All birds have a beak or bill that they use to eat, preen and build nests. However beaks come in many different shapes and sizes. A birds beak gives us an idea as to what they eat.

Our investigation question was to find out which food would be the easiest to pick up using different pieces of equipment.. we used 4 different types of food: rice, broken spaghetti, peppercorns and raisins.. The equipment we used to pick up the food were: twizzers, bulldog clips, chopsticks and cocktail sticks.

The children had so much fun and we finished the lesson by  making bird feeders that will be hung from the trees in the playground.

Science

During our science lessons we have been learning all about light an how we see things. Today’s focus was about reflections and how mirrors reflect light and different objects. The children made a periscope and used them in class to see things.

Art - Line Drawing Techniques

During our art lessons we have been exploring the range of effects we can make by just using lines and different pencil tones.  After exploring, we chose an animal and were only given half of the image. We then had to complete the other half using only our line techniques.  We are really pleased with the outcomes. Some children moved onto other images and tried using charcoal.
We hope you like our work as much as we do!

AUTUMN 1

Andy Goldsworthy

Today we learnt about the British Artist Andy Goldsworthy. We looked at pieces of his artwork and learnt how he only uses elements of the natural environment, photographs his temporary works and sometimes watches his work decompose or change due to the natural environment.
Below are some pictures of our creations in his style.

World Space Week

This week we learnt about satellites. We thought about what we can see when we look up at the night sky - stars. This moved us onto studying star constellations. We chose our favourites in the northern hemisphere and then made a star gazer including our favourite constellations.

Artwork

As part of our topic on natural disasters, we have been reading a book where a tsunami as just occurred. Linking to this we have studied the artwork of Hokusai - The Great Wave and imitated this. First we produced a pencil drawing and then moved onto paint.
We hope you like our work.
